Whether you call it pop, soda, or a combination of the two, it’s well known that soft drinks aren’t that good for you. But what makes these drinks so unhealthy? Is there a way to make them healthy while also making them taste good? Here at SmartSoda, we asked ourselves the same questions. In this blog, we’ll explore what makes popular sodas unhealthy and what the alternatives are for the drink.

Sugar

That was easy. Blog done, let’s pack it up and go home everyone. Great job.

Everyone knows there’s a bunch of sugar in soda, and that is no urban legend. The body doesn’t pick up on the calories and liquid sugar like it does with other foods, so you don’t feel full even though you’ve ingested a large amount of calories. A bit of sugar can actually be good for you though. Natural sugars in fruits and honey can help brain power as well as give you an all-natural energy boost. However, your body can only process so much sugar in a day. For men it’s about 37 grams and for women it’s about 25 grams. A regular can of Coke has 39 grams of sugar in it. As a comparison, there are only 19 grams of sugar in an apple, 14 grams in a banana, and 17 grams in a tablespoon of honey.

Foods and natural beverages normally have some kind of vitamin and/or mineral in them. Regular soda on the other hand does not. With the exception of a handful of milligrams of sodium and potassium, which add up to a whopping zero percent of your daily recommended value, there’s nothing in Coke other than sugar and artificial coloring. Regular soda is usually classified as empty calories, as that’s all it provides for your body.

Acids Can Break Down Teeth

Much like the Xenomorph from the Alien franchise, but having nothing else in common with at all, regular soda contains acids that can break down the enamel of your teeth. These acids, though somewhat mild by themselves, get a power boost when they’re combined with the high levels of sugar in regular soda. This combination can break down teeth at an accelerated rate, causing not only bad breath, but tooth decay as well.

Susceptibility to Disease

Drinking a lot of regular soda can make your body susceptible to certain diseases. Increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, dementia, gout, and even cancer have all been linked to chronically drinking large amounts of popular soda brands like Coke. These diseases aren’t caused by drinking sugary sodas, but consuming large amounts of them day to day has been shown to contribute to developing these particular diseases.

Healthy Alternatives

It used to be that water was the only true healthy alternative to soda. Fruit juice is high in vitamins and minerals, however most juices have a large amount of sugar and are also high in citric acid as well. Sports drinks are an alright alternative as well, but most are high in sodium and sugar. That’s where SmartSoda comes into play. We offer a healthy soda alternative that combines water with natural ingredients. All of our sodas use natural sugars as sweeteners, and each one has a fraction of the sugar content of a regular can of soda. You also won’t find any artificial colors or flavors in our drinks — only natural ingredients go into SmartSoda products.

All of our products are eco-friendly and can greatly reduce your carbon footprint. We offer packages for restaurants, hotels, cafes, homes, offices, and more! Learn more about SmartSoda, view our products, or contact SmartSoda to learn more about our company.
